Homework can eat up tremendous time and energy for all members of the family. How much should they be doing independently and how much support is too much? How can we respond when we see our son/daughter becoming increasingly frustrated or avoiding assignments?
It may help for us to take a step back and consider the purposes of homework. Here are a few:
  • to give children an opportunity to practice what they have learned in school
  • to help children develop the executive functions of organization, initiation, and follow through
  • to help children develop self-monitoring skills (e.g., what do I understand? what confuses me?) and self-advocacy (asking for parent or teacher help to resolve specific areas of confusion)
  • to increase independence and confidence
